Diagnosis and dietary management

Cow’s milk allergy is sometimes difficult to recognise and diagnose due to the variability of presenting symptoms.1  Often infants are given several distinct diagnoses before the common cause - cow’s milk allergy - is identified.

Early diagnosis and management are important to manage symptoms and to ensure the diet supports growth and development adequately.

European guidelines recommend starting with an extensively hydrolysed formula (eHF) with proven efficacy when managing mild to moderate cow’s milk allergy in non-breast-fed infants.2,3

In case of severe cow's milk allergy or for multiple food allergies, an amino acid-based formula may be considered as first choice.
